Mobile phones, microwaves and PDAs, all use embedded systems.

There are many Operating Systems embedded in mobile phones or GPS devices, such as Symbian or Embedded Linux.

The user has to pay for a Symbian license but is provided with a maintenance service.

Linux, a free Operating System, is open source. This system can be modulated to reduce its storage capacity. However, reducing the capacity for embedded application is not always easy and is costly. But there is a commercial version of Embedded Linux which is less expensive than Symbian and has a hotline as well as a forum on the web, where users can discuss problems.

Embedded Linux is the best embedded system today, and it is the least expensive. It is very interoperable and always compatible with other drivers and components.
