At the beginning of the Internet’s explosion, building a website meant an advanced knowledge in the field of web development (HTML, CSS, PHP…), even more if the creator wanted to make a dynamical website. The webmaster was the key character for anything that was going to be published on the Internet.

CMS (Content Manager System) reinvented the way that a website was developed and maintained. They offer a universal interface in order to be able to create and administer all the different aspects of a website: users and forums management, statistics, news publication, etc. The administrator was able to unload a fraction of his responsibilities; the goal of the CMS is to simplify every standard operation that might be done on a website.

Each of these CMS is not aimed at the same kind of website. SPIP is clearly oriented on a simple and efficient management of shared web magazine, in contrary to Joomla!, which has a much more impressive structure. That means more capabilities, but also a longer learning curve in order to master the fundamentals of this product.
